I’m very pleased to have a chance to talk with you because there are some very important things that I want to share with you. You are here, even when 2/3 of Ohio’s students are below proficiency in math and reading and 1/3 graduate without the basic skills required for success in college. That means about 70% of our state's students are graduating from high school and only 1/2 of them enroll in college.

Governor Taft, I need to say there are a lot of governor's that claim to be the "education governor". I have first hand experience with Governor Taft on many podiums, and I know that this isn't rhetoric with him, it is a sincere issue of the heart and the head. Meaning he knows what is really good and smart for Ohio.

In 2004, a national panel of outside experts chose our first winner -- the John A. Johnson achievement Plus Elementary School in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This state-of-the-art community school serves 320 children from kindergarten to 6th grade. Tonight we honor our second national winner – Hudson High School located in Hudson, Massachusetts, a small community of 18,000 people about 30 miles West of Boston.
